Welcome to Federal Government Engagement with Indigenous Modern Treaty Holders!
We’re going to spend the next hour together learning about engagement. We will focus on how the Federal Government can appropriately engage with Indigenous modern treaty holders, your responsibility in engagement, considerations for different stages of engagement, and respecting diverse realities of each modern treaty holder.
We will also answer common questions about modern treaties and introduce the Land Claims Agreements Coalition (LCAC), which seeks to advance the interests of all modern treaty holders in Canada.

By the time you finish this short course, you should be able to:
- Define modern treaties
- Describe the general history and context of modern treaties in Canada
- Identify where in Canada modern treaties are located
- Understand how to properly engage with Indigenous modern treaty holders
- Identify what engagement is and how it is different from consultation
- Understand specific engagement requirements listed in the modern treaty
- Understand the Federal Government’s responsibility to engage with Indigenous modern treaty holders
- Describe the different stages of engagement and what is required along the way
- Describe what the Land Claims Agreements Coalition (LCAC) is, how to contact its members, and its role in modern treaty holder engagement
