IBAs are not the only type of economic development agreement modern treaties are making with private sector partners.
In 2021, Tla’amin Nation and Western Forest Products signed a partnership renewal agreement that commits both parties to new collaborative resource planning and economic development projects in the Tla’amin Area (upper Sunshine Coast, southwestern BC).
With the support of Western, Tla’amin Nation is developing a seven-generation Integrated Resource Management Plan (IRMP) that will support Tla’amin values-based resource management practices among all land users and operators in the Tla’amin Area. These collaborative planning processes ensure that forestry decisions in Tla’amin’s territory continue in a way that is economically and environmentally sustainable, and that future Tla’amin citizens are able to access and benefit from the resources for generations to come.
