The Ka:’yu:’k’t’h’/Che:k:tles7et’h’ First Nation (KCFN) is on Vancouver Island, where fishing for salmon and many other species is big business. Of course, because they are self-governing, KCFN relationships with the Government of Canada and regional organizations are unique.
Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) has formed fisheries roundtables throughout Vancouver Island. However, because they are self-governing KCFN created their own fisheries roundtable, then entered into a collaborative relationship with DFO. This relationship has been fruitful, with sharing of information and resources.
