Under the James Bay Northern Quebec Agreement, Cree communities are located on federal lands set aside for the exclusive use of the Cree.
While individuals cannot own land in Cree communities, Cree citizens can obtain possessory rights to house plots from Cree local governments, and can also obtain mortgage financing with the approval of the Cree local government.
