There are 4 main categories of land under the James Bay Northern Quebec Agreement (JBNQA), one of the modern treaties of the Cree Nation of Eeyou Istchee:
Category Ia. Lands under federal jurisdiction: Land for the exclusive use and benefit of Cree communities and under their administration and control, but ultimately under federal government jurisdiction.
Category Ib. Lands under provincial jurisdiction: Land under direct control of, managed by, and for the exclusive use of Cree communities, but ultimately under provincial jurisdiction.
Category II. Lands around each community:Land over which the Crees have exclusive hunting, fishing and trapping rights, and that is managed by the Cree Nation Government.
Category III.All other lands: All ancestral lands of the Cree Nation that are covered by the JBNQA and not in the other three categories. The Cree Nation has protected hunting, fishing and trapping rights over these lands.
