Welcome to the Modern Treaties and Self Government Online Course!

We’re going to spend the next hour together learning about what self-government means in a modern treaty context, seeing what it looks like on the ground, and exploring self-government successes and challenges. We’ll also answer common questions about modern treaties and introduce the Land Claims Agreements Coalition, which seeks to advance the interests of all modern treaty holders in Canada.

Course Objectives

By the time you finish this short course, you should be able to:

• Relate the history and current context of modern treaties and self-government agreements (SGAs)
• Understand the connection between modern treaties and self-government agreements
• Understand basic elements of self-government agreements, and why Indigenous peoples pursue them
• Understand challenges and opportunities around implementing self-government agreements
• Understand what the LCAC is, how to contact its members and how to gather further information on these topics
