In British Columbia’s Nass River valley, the Nisg̱a’a modern treaty creates two main categories of land:
Nisg̱a’a Lands: The Nisg̱a’a Nation owns all 1,992 km2 of Nisg̱a’a Lands in “fee simple”. (Fee simple is the most complete form of ownership.)
The Nass Area: The Nisg̱a’a Nation also has substantial treaty rights throughout the 26,838 km 2 Nass Area, which include constitutionally protected hunting rights in the 16,101 km 2 Nass Wildlife Area and constitutionally protected fishing rights in the entire Nass Area. Additional rights include environmental assessment and protection, outdoor recreation and water.
