Beading has been part of many Indigenous cultures for thousands of years, often passed down from grandmother and mother to daughter. Heather Dickson is from Carcross Tagish First Nation in the Yukon and the Nuxalk Nation in British Columbia. She grew up surrounded by Indigenous culture and traditional sewing. She now runs Dickson Designs, which sells the Original Granny Hanky Headband, a combination of traditional and modern First Nation fashion, among other beaded products. Approximately 20 Indigenous women bead their own designs onto the Granny Hankies, some of which have been passed down for generations.
Women all over the North value Heather Dickson’s work, and many leaders wear her products.
