Sakku Investments, the development corporation for the Kivalliq Region of Nunavut, is involved in multiple joint ventures and partnerships to service mines such as Meadowbank and Meliadine. These projects, as well as the mines themselves, provide hundreds of jobs to Inuit, other Nunavummiut (residents of Nunavut) and fly-in workers from southern jurisdictions such as Quebec. In a region with a population of about 11,000, the mines are a major employer. Businesses in the transportation and accommodation sectors also benefit from mine-related activity.
